In this essay I will discuss the conflict between Jamel and Prem Kumar in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Then I will explain how this conflict helped me understand the idea of love will overcome all by discussing and explaining the techniques used to show the conflict. The conflict between Jamel and Prem lasts throughout the movie because Jamel is a slumdog who is in love and desperate to find to find his one true love Latika but the only way for him to get to her is for her to see him on the game show “Who wants to be a Millionaire”. But Prem was once a slumdog and won the game and is now the show host and he has been the only slumdog to win the game since. So as Jamel comes into the game and starts answering a lot of questions right, Prem wants Jamel to lose so he doesn’t lose his reputation which causes the conflict between Jamel and Prem.
In this paragraph I will discuss how cinematography helped me understand the conflict between Jamel and Prem. The tree shots that I will discuss in this paragraph are mid-shots, crane-shots and over the shoulder-shots. The first shot which are the mid-shot which show the tension and the conflict between the two characters sitting in there seats during the show. The second shot is the crane-shot which shows the bird’s eye view of the game which makes the game look like an arena which builds tension between Jamel and Prem. The third shot which is an over the shoulders shot of Jamel and Prem when they are about to enter the game. This shot shows how confident and relaxed Prem is and how nervous and shaky Jamel is which shows that Prem is in total control over the conflict between each other. A quote of this is when Prem asks Jamel “Are you ready?” but Jamel doesn’t reply to this. This shows Jamel’s nervous and Pre is confident. The camera shots shot all this.
The contrast in acting style and dialogue of the two characters show the conflict between Jamel and Prem. Prem is a very sarcastic, arrogant, insulting and rude character. He uses dialogue and acting style to show this. A quote of Prem being insulting and rude is when he was mocking Jamel about his job by saying “Assistant phone-basher” and “Chai-Wallah”. These quotes show the conflict between the characters because Prem is being very rude and insulting to Jamel as though he is trying to sterr him up. Jamel’s Acting style and dialogue is very nervous, honest person who only speaks when spoken to. Jamel’s acting style is very nervous, jumpy which shows that Prem is in control of the conflict between the two characters at the beginning of the movie. But as Jamel gets more and more questions right Jamel gets more confident and Prem gets nervous. An example of this is when Prem gives Jamel the wrong answer so that Jamel would lose the game and he would keep his reputation.

Explain
One of the ways Prem and Jamel’s conflict helped me understand the main idea of love will overcome all, is the use of flashbacks. Throughout the movie you see a lot of flashbacks from Jamel’s memory that show how Jamal was living in poverty and how he lived as a slum dog. He looks at these flashbacks to find the answers that Prem, the game show host asks him. These flashbacks show Jamel has to overcome his past life and his slum dog origin. An example of this is when Jamel’s brother Salim rapes his one true love Latika and points a gun at him so that he would go away. This flashback helped Jamel answer the question “Who invented the revolver”, because the gun that Salim pointed at him was a colt .45. This helped me understand why Jamel has to overcome his past and find his love Latika. Jamel goes onto the game so that she can find him.
The conflict also helped me to understand Jamel’s love for Latika. Since Jamel doesn’t know where Latika is he doesn’t know how to get to her. The only way was to be on the game show, because he goes on this the conflict between Jamel and Prem starts. This conflict shows how much Jamel loves Latika because of the flashbacks and the dialogue between Jamel and Prem. An example of the flashbacks is from Jamel’s childhood, they were close friends but then Jamel and Salim left her. But then years later Jamel went looking for her and found her but left Latika and Salim because Salim was going to rape her. Then years later again he went looking for her and found her and he tried to convince her to run away from the gangster and marry him but she wouldn’t. Some dialogue that Jamel says to Prem shows how much he loves Latika. A quote of this is when Jamel says “It’s not about the money”. This shows that even though Jamel is on a very high question for a lot of money, he’s still only on the show for Latika’s attention. Evidence of this is when he talks to Latika for the last question on Salim’s phone, Jamel says “I knew you’d be watching”. This shows that the only reason Jamel went on the show was to find Latika. This all adds to the conflict between Jamel and Prem.
In conclusion this essay has discussed and explained how the conflict between Jamel and Prem helped me understand the idea of love will overcome all. It has helped me by using the techniques of Chinatography, Acting Style, Dialogue and soundtrack to the beginning of the movie and the use of flashbacks to show Jamel’s past.
